Mid January and no snow? What a strange winter we are having.

Tiffany & Eric had hopes of shooting their e-session in fluffy white snow, and why not, we live in Aberdeen, SD, a place that is known for setting record snow fall this time of year.

But alas as you can tell we have very little to no snow (at this time), but that didn't put a damper on this happy couple. They were great to work with and super excited to be having their engagement pictures taken, even sans snow. :)

I know their wedding this summer is going to be great and they will be such a happy couple to photograph, no matter the weather! ;)

(I have to say this was a wonderful team of professionals to work with. They made everything look absolutely AMAZING!)

When Ashley and Kelly first met with me they were planning a May 2012 wedding, it then quickly went to a Jamaican destination wedding (which they did end up going - only after the wedding), once they heard some of their family and friends wouldn't be able to make it to Jamaica they then started planning an 11.11.11 wedding.

And in all honesty I can't imagine this wedding any other way then the way it went, it fit Ashley & Kelly to a "T", it was the perfect day, and was everything they wanted.

With a classic vintage, yet natural style, surrounded by the love and support of those closest to them, this wedding was simply a joy to witness and document. Thank you Ashley & Kelly for choosing me. And once again congratulations! : )

Chad and Kayla's e-session was such a great shoot! These two are so easy going, super sweet, and very excited for their big day.

I first met Kayla when I photographed her sisters wedding (Kimberly & Bret) back in 2008, it really doesn't seem that long ago - wow, time is flying.

I am super excited to now be photographing Kayla and Chad's wedding this summer! Kayla was showing me some DIY projects she's been working on for the wedding and they look great, I can't wait to see it all come together. I love being able to document those personal touches that couples put into their day.

I don't get asked often to shoot senior sessions, but for those I do/have I've noticed some similar traits in those young individuals. Like Thomas, they are intelligent, respectful, responsible, kind, and independent (well as independent as you can get at this age). ;)

They definitely have a good sense of who they are and I enjoy being able to document them at this beginning stage of the journey of finding out who they will become.

What is in a constant state of motion, around 2 1/2 feet tall, as cute as can be, speaks in fragmented sentences, and has a curiosity bigger than that of which you can even imagine....A 2 year old!

It is such a fun stage, with all the new things they are learning and how quickly they pick things up and with such a curiosity...it certainly keeps moms and dads (and photographers) on their toes! This little guy certainly fits the bill and it was fun to be able to capture these images of him at this wonderful age.

These two were SO happy and in love, grinning from ear to ear, and it was a fabulous thing to witness! The entire day was flawless and full of fun. And oh did I mention the dress...it was gorgeous! I so love my job; photographing gorgeous people and their gorgeous attire.

I loved shooting Art & Maggie's family session. It reminded me that no matter how big your kids get, they still remain just that your "kids". These guys are a fun family, so easy going and comical. Plus how sweet are Art & Maggie, hard to believe they hadn't had pictures of just the two of them since their wedding!

It was a little bit of a bitter sweet reunion for them all though, because the youngest one will be heading over to Afghanistan for the next year, serving in the Marines. Here's to a fast and safe year for your family. : )

These may look like simple little cupcakes with pretty pink frosting, but don't be fooled...these were the BEST CUPCAKES EVER!!! They were little bites of heaven I tell you, infused with amaretto and caramel and the wonderful frosting on top...ahhh, THE BEST. : ) And Vanessa was the best bride ever because she sent a little box filled with them home with me! : )

It was such a beautiful evening when I photographed Cory and Reannon's session. The light was amazing! And so was the company!

I learned an interesting thing that night, that the mosquitoes in Hawaii are even bigger then the one's we have here in Aberdeen, SD; I KNOW, impossible, right! But Cory & Reannon live in Hawaii and they say it is so. I guess we give up the beautiful sandy beaches and ocean for smaller mosquitoes. ; )

I first met Michelle's family when I photographed their other gorgeous daughter Micaela's senior pictures. Also I had never been to Mobridge before and I must say what a nice little town. As I got closer to the town the green rolling hills and blue, blue sky touching them with a scattered hay bail here and there was quite a refreshing scene.

Oh and one more thing I just have to mention was how cool their wedding cake looked and how amazingly good it tasted!!!

What a way to start of my 2011 wedding season!
I can almost guarantee that when Sarah and Mike were planning their mid-May wedding they never imagined having to deal with the possibility of snow. But aside from the weather it was a beautiful day!

I can only hope that when my kids grow older we can be as close as a family as both Sarah and Mike's families are. It was a genuine pleasure being around this couple and their loved ones all day.

The celebration and amount of energy that their friends and family added was something - something I can't put words to (I'm a photographer, not a poet) ; )

Remember the weekend we got 17 inch's of snow? Well Nicole and Jeff had originally scheduled their e-session for that weekend, but with the crazy winter weather here we happily rescheduled for a month later when the weather "should" be nicer...of course here in NE South Dakota that dosn't really exist until July! ;) (Ok - perhaps I'm exaggerating).

In all honesty I actually love shooting sessions in a variety of weather, it always offers a creative challenge that I thrive on and keeps the feel very natural & real for the couples to be out in the elements of nature. Ok so now I'm rambling on about the weather again...enough.

On to the wonderful couple I got to work with, Nicole and Jeff (who were total troopers in the wind chill that we shot in).

Spring is coming, right?

Well for Brian & Samantha's session it couldn't have been farther away. This was by far my coldest shoot (7 degrees). Luckily Brian & Samantha wanted a winter shoot and we even had fresh snow to make it all pretty. I'm sure by now feeling has returned to their fingers. ; )

Even with the cold temps we had a great shoot and I can't wait to shoot their wedding come Sept. (I'm sure it will at least be in the double digits then). : )

A new addition!

Well the holidays are over and things are starting to get back to normal, all be it a new normal around here.

I want to apologize for being a little slow lately to respond. There is a very good and unexpected reason. I was expecting a baby at the end of January, but 2 days before Christmas I had a Dr. appointment and was told that I would be having the baby that very day, c-section (she was breach & growth restricted).

Everything turned out fine and everyone is healthy. Our family now has a new beautiful, tiny baby girl. She was 5 weeks early and only 4 lbs. & 13 oz., so needless to say we were quite surprised and truthfully not at all ready for her arrival! It's now been 4 weeks and I am finally starting to get back to where I was that day before my Dr. appointment or at least somewhat.

Ben + Eryn | E-session | Aberdeen SD Photography

Eryn called back in September to schedule her and Ben's e-session. She was hoping for the classic winter scene of fresh white snow, so she picked Dec. 3rd and wished for snow...well we got fresh snow, but of course here in SD with snow typically comes wind. Needless to say it was COLD, so we moved quick and captured some great shots of the two of them in their winter wonderland.

As cold as I may have been (and the both of them) I still absolutely love it when couples take such a personal approach to their photo sessions with me. The images always turn out with an up close intimate look of who they are and have special meaning to them and their connection together.

I know I've said it before, but I can't help myself in saying it again, I simply have the best clients...yep every single one of you. It's been my pleasure working with all of you. :)

Adam + Elissa | The Wedding | South Dakota Wedding Photography

It was a simply gorgeous fall day in the countryside. Adam and Elissa both grew up in the country and both love being out in the country, so this church out in the middle of the countryside was perfect for them to mark the beginning of their marriage together. It also happened to be the same church Elissa's parents were married in 30 years ago!

The day had such a smooth and simple feel to it, everyone there was right where they wanted to be. The family support & closeness was very evident and along with the surroundings it just made for a very close & intimate atmosphere, perfect for a wedding. And even though there wasn't a dance, everyone stuck around to celebrate with the couple and share in a delicious meal prepared by the Church ladies and a very, very delicious sampling of assorted cheesecakes for dessert.

Jen and Tyler both grew up on farms and they both LOVE the countryside. So when planning their perfect wedding they decided to stay close to a place near and dear to their hearts, the place where Tyler proposed to Jen, a place that's unique and "totally their style", the middle of a pasture.

It was simple and beautiful. Although not to be out done by their E-session (which started out as a cool fall day and ended in the beginnings of a blizzard), the day much the same had a mind of it's own, it started out quite cool and cloudy, then came the sprinkles/light rain and wind, but low and behold by the time the ceremony was to start the day had done a 180 and was bright and beautiful. (I must admit though, picture-wise, I did enjoy the cloud coverage for part of the day) ;)

Josh and Britney and their entire wedding party were incredible! It was 98 degrees, I have no idea where the humidity was, but it had to be up there, and so sunny, not a single cloud in the sky!

These guys had genuine smiles constantly and never once complained of the heat. The girls hair and makeup held up so well (someone definitely knew what their were doing...thanks Micky and Britney).

It was just all around great, the couple (so happy for them, they are wonderful couple), the families (so loving and happy), the wedding party (so fun and involved).

Yep, that was the temp on Jordan and Tarah's beautiful wedding day. As hot as it was these two were so happy and in love that I think the temp was oblivious to them. :)

We went out and about and got some great shots, scenic shots...just what Tarah had described to me she'd imagined (love it when brides have a vision). And then after the ceremony everyone went on to enjoy the simply beautiful reception at the Ward! And the wonderfully delightful cupcakes (I had a pink one and I swear if left alone with them I could have ate 10)!

I had such a wonderful time documenting Caitlin and Tony's wedding. Beyond the fact that they themselves are a wonderful couple, they are surrounded with amazing family and friends! I've had the pleasure of working with Tony's family in the past (I photographed his sisters wedding 3 yrs ago) and they are genuinely the nicest people around! Plus if you're in the market for the most beautiful jewelry, you have to stop in and meet Anthony Sr. of Anthony Jewelers, he does the most amazing work!

I'd love to say how the weather was just as wonderful as the company, but that was one of the windiest of days EVER, we were dealing with 50 mph winds! Having experience in unpredictable weather and the good will of a local business we were still able to shoot outdoors for a bit and get some beautiful shots.

Seriously these two are absolutely gorgeous!

I only wish I could pull that off for even an hour! She said they were comfortable...note to all brides, beautiful shoes can be comfortable shoes. ; )

Also, how fun is it that the newly married couple celebrated by stopping by the local Ice Cream Shoppe, Twist Cone, for a treat!

Never too early! | South Dakota Wedding Photographer

I just wanted to write a little note to remind everyone (who may be checking this blog) that it's never to early to book your photographer. If you are interested in booking a photographer and think "oh I'll just wait till things get a little closer or more details are planned" you may miss out on the photographer you really wanted.

I myself have had a few run ins already with dates that are already booked or there are multiple couples interested in the same dates. And in those cases I know I, and most reputable photographers handle it the same way, no matter who inquired first the date goes to the one who makes the booking official first (in my case it's with a signed contract and retainer fee paid).

I find this to be one of the more difficult parts of my job, because couples are all excited to work with me and then if it's already booked I have to say no. Fortunately though I do know other photographers I can recommend in those situations (I cringe at the idea of someone not having a professional photographer to document one the biggest, most beautiful events in your lives...of course I'm a wedding photographer so I may be a little biased!)

With the 2010 wedding season upon us and 2011 booking season here, I encourage engaged couples to never be afraid to book too early. : )

And because no one wants a post without any pictures...I introduce Sophie. She is our 7 year English Bulldog and the official "Moment to Moment Greeter" (she is also sometimes "dress-up companion" to our 5 yr old)!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE how happy these two are, they are absolutely adorable! I seriously think you couldn't pay them to not smile, it's just not in their nature. And well who doesn't just love that.

You would never know that they walked through snow up to their knees, their shoes and feet were soaking wet, their photographer fell over into the snow and needed help getting back up (hey it happens:)), and it was on the verge of rain the entire time.

All that comes through is how truly happy these two are and for that I am so so excited to be documenting their wedding this fall. :)

South Dakota Wedding Photography

About a week ago Kari Mertz, of Kari Mertz Photography, gave me a call to see if I'd be willing/able to help her out with shooting a wedding here in Aberdeen (her normal 2nd shooter wasn't able to come along with her that day). I was able and happy to oblige with the request.

As a solo photographer I don't have co-workers (no water cooler chit chat for me), so I like to think of fellow photogs as co-workers, in a way, and I'd like to think that for the most part we all work together to support each other and our industry. : )

Working with Kari was just that, plus a lot of fun. We had a sweet, fun couple (Jill & Cole) to venture out into the snow and cold with us...they were so great...they were cold, but GREAT!

Lifestyle House Shoot | South Dakota Photography

One of my favorite decorators/Event Coordinators, Mr. Jerry Trefz, called and asked if I'd be able to help his client with a project. Now I typically do not shoot homes, but as an absolute appreciator of great design & decor I figured, why not.

This was a beautiful home with some new additions, that their daughter (an interior designer/decorator from Texas) did for them and was hoping for some portfolio shots for her budding new career.

Here's what we came up with (well just a handful of my favorites anyway, too many to show them all).

Adam + Jen | The Proposal

I received this email about a month ago:

Hello,
I have a question regarding a type of session. Right now I'm deployed to Kuwait on my second deployment with the Army. I'll be home on a 15 day leave from Nov 27 - Dec 11.

During that time I'm planning on proposing to my girlfriend. I plan
on doing it at the Ramkota in the big convention center. That's where
we met at her sisters wedding while we were both in the wedding party.

I'd like to set up a couple hundred candles in the shape of a heart.
I'd like to bring her in there blind folded and propose to her in the
middle of the heart. I'd like you to photograph this while it
happens, and maybe do a few more shots afterwards.

I know this is probably an odd request, but when I saw your website I
knew I had to ask. Your work is beautiful and this is a moment I want
us to remember all our lives.

Payten | Lifestyle Session

Payten and her family were in town visiting relatives for Thanksgiving and decided that some pictures of Payten would be nice. So via coming across my website, they gave me a call. :)

Payten and I were a perfect match. She loves being outdoors and I love taking photographs outdoors, like two peas in a pod. :)

Tony + Caitlin | E-session | Aberdeen, SD

Wow, I've been busy with E-sessions lately, and I just can't say enough how much I really enjoy these sessions. : )

I really like getting know the couple and see how they warm up in front of the camera, at first everyone is a little unsure of what to do, but by the end everyone transgresses to being completely comfortable with a camera (of my size) following their every move. ;)

Check out Caitlin and Tony's E-session below. These two are so sweet together and it was fun to see how Tony would try to get Caitlin to laugh.

Josh + Britney | E-session | Sioux Falls, SD

I love shooting in new locations, it's exciting, challenging, and well just plain fun. ; ) Sioux Falls is full of great places to shoot (having shot there only a handful of times), I feel like a kid in a candy store when there.

Josh & Britney were great fun, their session has a variety of "looks", urban, country, woodsy and we stayed within the city limits the whole time (basically only 2 place's).

Although we were a bit frozen when we were done, I'd defiantly say it was worth a touch of frost bite (jk, no one got frost bite).

Tyler + Jen | E-session | South Dakota Wedding Photography

E-sessions are GREAT for so many reasons...we get to know each other better, you guys get to feel a bit more comfortable in front of the camera, the obvious is the great pictures of the two of you, and in Tyler & Jen's case we even got to challenge mother nature a bit.

Jen & Tyler love the outdoors and wanted to do their shoot around the countryside by Tyler's family farm (I love when couple's incorporate what they love into their sessions). The shoot stared out like any other, just a bit cold, cloudy fall day...well about an hour after that we found ourselves in the beginning of a snow storm!

Jen & Tyler were great and we finished up their session in the snow! I have to say I really like how the snow adds another element to their photos. : )

Oh how I love being able to photograph babies!

Thank you Brian & Mary for letting me capture your little guy, he is absolutely adorable! His little face was so expressive and he didn't seem to mind the camera at all. I especially loved how he simply closed his eyes and fell asleep when he got tired, which then allowed for some really cute sleeping shots.

Nate and Jamie's wedding was such a beautiful & classic wedding! Every detail was thought of and it all went together stunningly (that's a word, right?) and yet relaxed...just very CLASSIC.

Everything was really truly beautiful, the bride & groom, the dress, the flowers, the weather, the reception, and the rings! I especially loved Jamie's ring, so I asked her about it and she shared with me that Nate knew she liked classic/antique looking jewelry and so he went to Anthony Jewelers and had her ring custom designed just for her! *That is sooo incredibility sweet...hint, hint to my husband who will be reading this*

And the wedding party was seriously a hoot! While taking pictures we all piled in the Big Shot Logde hunting bus and I tell you what this crew is a wildly fun bunch (just watch the slide show below to see what I mean). ; )

Nate & Jamie, thank you for allowing me to document and share in your day, I very much enjoyed every minute of it.

Lauren + Jennifer | The Album

I know I discuss this with every one of my clients, but for those of you out there who don't get to be in on that discussion, Albums are my all time favorite thing! I even set my business up to totally focus around the Album, and I love being able to produce this beautiful finished product for couples & their families. It truly is a family heirloom.

After many years, the pictures on the walls & desks have been replaced, and images disks have been archived away, I know that my clients will be able to easily pull out their wedding album to look back on their day and remember from beginning to end, what they felt, looked like, and the memories shared with loved one's on that very special day. : )

Just makes me happy thinking about it!

Lauren & Jennifer's album is exactly that, it represents them to a "T"; beautiful, fun, sweet, loving, easy going, confident, and 100% happy.

Dan + Stacy | The Wedding | MN Wedding Photography

Dan and Stacy both grew up on the farmlands of a small MN town, which led to their decision to get married in their beautiful "country" church (it was literally surrounded by fields and a total of 3 small houses, it was simply beautiful).

When they look back on their wedding it will be filled with the memories & pictures of home. A place where it was easy to tell that they are both so loved.

It was gorgeous weather and I loved Stacy's cathedral vail in it, it would just float in the breeze. And the wheat field was perfect for them, they look amazing. : )

This shot had to be done...I'm pretty sure that the ENTIRE wedding party are huge MN Vikings Football fans...there was a song or chant that was sung at least 3 or 4 times that day by the men in party.

If you follow my blog regularly you might notice that I don't often shoot too many senior sessions...but every once in a while I get a super cool senior to call me up and ask if I'll take their photos (I have to say that I'm extremely flattered when that happens).

And that's just what happened earlier this summer when Sarah's mom called to schedule an appointment.

Turns out that Sarah is friends with the only other senior session I've done, Annie

Working with one person is definitely different than working with a couple. It has a totally different flow, but it's good to mix things up every once in a while. :)

David + Jennifer | E-session

Being able to "go with the flow" and handle situations with ease are very good traits to have. Both David & Jen have just that, while shooting their session Jen accidentally locked their car with the keys in it, which for some may have created a bit of an awkward situation, but they both smiled about it and handled it well.

And on the bright side we then had the chance to just wonder around the area and keep taking photos while waiting for the lock smith to arrive (although, he was actually quite quick).

Aaron + Stephanie | The Wedding

I made my first appearance in Jamestown, ND for Aaron and Stephanie's wedding and what a nice town it was (especially the Jamestown college campus area, very nice).

Aaron & Steph had a beautiful wedding day with lots of little personal touches...they made their own unique programs, her grandmother made all the bridesmaid dresses (she did a wonderful job...sewing seems to be becoming such a lost talent), Aaron's mom and Steph made 300 teal frosted cupcakes, and I believe Steph and her mom made all the flower arrangements too.

This is the perfect image of Stephanie, she was smiling & laughing the entire day!

I truly had a wonderful time photographing Jason & Crystal's wedding! It was a beautiful wedding day. These two were so down to earth, stylish, fun, in love, and absolutely gorgeous. Not to mention that I got to photograph my first pair of Manolo Blahnik's! As Crystal said, "I just happened to wonder in (a store in NY) and see them and couldn't leave without them". As a fellow fan of Sarah Jessica Parker's obsession with Manolo Blahnik's in the hit series "Sex In The City" I too wouldn't have been able to leave without them!

Paul + Haylee | The Wedding

What a great couple, Paul & Haylee! They were married on June 6th and were surrounded by their family and closest friends, with whom they all took the day's weather in with stride (rainy & cold almost the entire day).

I have to say though that I honestly loved the gray clouds and Paul & Haylee's willingness to have a little "rain" fun and make the best memories with it! Every couples day is most definitely unique, and I find that a lot of time the weather plays as big of roll as the color scheme does...except you can't choose the weather, but it's part of the day and really creates the atmosphere that helps to create the memories of one of the most important days or you life. :)

Johny Cavelle Dance

I had the extraordinary pleasure of photographing 11 senior dance students last week and I'm just thrilled with the results...these girls are amazing dancers and I was so impressed with their level of performance!

I believe most of the girls have been in the dance program since around the age of 4, and I must share a few of their photographs, their simply stunning.
